Welcome to Horror Movie Night!

First time visitor? You should probably read my greeting first.

Added a review to the surprisingly disappointing Zombieland. Really surprised I did`nt like that movie more.

Just threw up some reviews for The Ruins and Drag Me to Hell. Both were very good and I strongly recommend them.

I`m slowly making progress on a site redesign here. I`m hoping to make more user friendly and present more useful information on the front page...I don`t have the spare time I did when I started the site so we`ll see how it goes.

New reviews are up for the Day of the Dead remake and The Signal. The Day of the Dead remake is a good zombie film but a shitty remake. The Signal was almsot perfect, and I highly recommend it!

I'm finally getting around to reviewing the Friday the 13th movie franchise... I've started with Part VI since it's the one I've most recently seen. I stated this in my review for that movie, but I'll state it here again. I'll be rating the movies in the franchise in comparison with eachother, and NOT in comparison with the wide world of horror cinema. The fluctuation in quality amongst the entries in the franchise is great enough that I feel I need a full 5 Bruce Campbell head range to truly and effectively rate them all. I'll also go on record as saying that against ALL other horror movies, I wouldn't rate a single Friday the 13th entry as higher than 3.5 Bruce Campbell heads. But amongst themselves, as I'll be ranking them, 5 Bruce Campbell heads means it's the best in the franchise, whilst 0 Bruce Campbell heads means it's the worst in the franchise.

I've decided that unless I'm especially inspired... I will no longer be "summing up" the plotlines for the movies I review. The reason is twofold:

1. This information is easily available at many other places on the internet, and...

2. I'm lazy.

So there ya go. I'll instead be referencing thumbnail plot overviews from other sites such as imdb.com (for example). What you'll get from me specifically is my opinion on the movie. You may not care for my opinion, and that's okay, but my opinion is the only unique thing I have to offer here. So with that all being said I have a much higher hope of actually completing all the half-started reviews I've got here. Keep your fingers crossed!

Time for a long overdue update... nothing major to report... a new review is up for "Dead Silence"... oh yeah and

GO SEE GRINDHOUSE!

This movie looks awesome and it's got Kurt Russel in it! If I've never mentioned it before I'm a huge Kurt Russel fan! I'd love it if these kind of movies made a comeback so go spend your money on it so they'll make more like it!

Oh, and I guess have a happy Easter.

Long live zombie Jesus!

I'm slowly getting around to updating all the movie reviews. Today I finally reviewed "Boxing Helena", "City of the Living Dead", and "The Crazies". The problem with me waiting upwards of 6-10 months to get around to these reviews is that I don't remember a whole lot of specifics and i'm left with only a vague recollection of my initial impression. But oh well! What are you gonna do about it? That's what I thought.

Happy holidays everybody! Go out and see Black Christmas on the 25th!

Thanks to Brian for bringing this to my attention:

Evil Dead The Musical!

It's only in New York right now but one can hope that it'll find its way to Chicago!

Matt Hoffman has again provided some excellent news content for this website:

The news is that any horror fan out there should check out www.flashbackweekend.com and seriously think about going to this event if you are able. It's a weekend long event starting on Fri. July 28th which will feature horror icons such as Roddy Piper (They Live), Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog, Creepshow, Escape From New York), much of the cast of the Devils Rejects, Svengoolie, and Lloyd Kaufman (founder of freakin' Troma!) amongst many more!

The other cool part of the weekend is the "drive-in" portion where you get to watch some great horror flicks in a drive-in style environment. Some of the movies being shown this year are "They Live", "Halloween", and "The Devil's Rejects". Go to the website for much more information.

Thanks to Hoffman for keeping this site somewhat relevant!

Matt Hoffman (a fellow HMNer) just sent me the following link which is to a bracket style voting system in which all the fine folks on the internet get to vote for the top horror movie of all time! This is setup pretty cool and they've got most of the top horror films you'd expect, plus some nice surprises, and of course... a few questionable choices... Audition? Anyways, there are 64 movies entered into the contests and there are 2 matchups you can vote on every Mon, Wed, and Fri... voting has already begun, however you havn't missed but two matches so far... Here's the link:

The Greatest Horror Film Tournament

Thanks to Matt for finding this and pointing it out for the site!

Rock N' Roll Nightmare is FINALLY receiving it's long overdue DVD release! Behold:

It'll be out on June 27th... everybody must go and guy this masterpiece!

2006-03-15
March 24th is the next scheduled Horror Night. However we'll be doing things a bit differently than normal this time. See first we'll be having the very first officially sanctioned HMN field trip! We'll be gathering at the AMC Barrington 30 movie theatre complex where we'll attend a screening of the remake of "The Hills Have Eyes". After the movie we'll head back to Hoff's place for the usual shenanigans. I just received in the mail yesterday the sequel to Rock N' Roll Nightmare: "Intercessor: Another Rock N' Roll NIghtmare". Hopefully we'll get a chance to watch it on the 24th. It features the return of John Triton, and includes more great music by the band Thor! Can't wait!

I havn't updated this page in quite a while... It's been abused and neglected... but oh well... I'm a busy and very important person! Anyways... I'm thinking about a site redesign... I'm not too keen on the current layout.. might try and stretch my web design wings a bit and do something different... and maybe I'll actually get around to finishing the multitude of reviews I've started... we'll see.

GO SOX!!!

2005-10-11
Okay folks there's an official Horror Movie Night coming up on Friday Oct. 21st. Not sure what we'll watch yet but odds are at least one of the films won't be crap.

Also, a review of the 1981 classic Dead and Buried has just been posted.

2005-09-15
I've just put reviews up for Hellboy, and the highly disturbing Funny Games. I apologize for the number of pending reviews (i.e. "review coming shortly...")... but let's face it folks... I'm incredibly lazy and sometimes I just don't feel like writing coherently... I could very easily write a long run-on, stream of consciousness, sentence... but while that'd be very easy for me to do.. it's be a bitch for you to decipher... So just bear w/ me... I'll get to all the reviews eventually...

I'd also like to take this moment to point out that if any of you out there wanna post a review or disagree w/ a review I've posted.. I'd love to hear from you! That's what the message board is for... I encourage you to contribute. Even though I normally loathe the company of others... sometimes it's just more enjoyable when there's actual people to interact with!

Cheers!

My good friend (and fellow HMNer) Matt Hoffman just sent me a URL to a very interesting interview w/ Joel Reed.... Joel Reed is the creator of one of the greatest (and sickest) b-movies of all time: Blood Sucking Freaks. Well apparantly Joel is planning on filming Blook Sucking Freaks 2! This is phenomenal news, and I hope he gets the funding he needs to do it! Check out the interview here.

An old acquaintance of mine (Raul) runs a pretty cool site called Walter the Frankenstein Monster, and he's just started updating it again. This site chronicles his and his buddy Jerry's dealings with their "Frankenstein Monsters"... and I do mean Frankenstein Monsters... these two guys created actual walking talking Frankenstein monsters...

I knew this kid in high-school pretty well... he used to come to Horror Movie nights in the early days... wierd kid... it doesn't surprise me at all to that he pulled this off... Anyways, you should definately check out his site... it's a hell of a fascinating read!

Good news on the George Romero front... apparantly "Land of the Dead" (the 4th film in Romero's living dead series) has been moved up several months and will in fact hit theaters in June of '05! I'm personally very stoked to see this film, and I hope to god it lives up to my vast expectations...

2005-02-11
Tonight I get to watch Rock N' Roll Nightmare again!!! It's movies like this that makes HMN truly worth doing... I'll post a review of it later... but trust me... just go out and buy this movie! You'll have to find a used VHS somewhere, but it's definately worth it!

2004-12-27
X-Mas Haul: I got the Friday the Thirteenth Box-Set for christmas this year! It's been quite a while since I've seen some of these movies, but over the next several months I'll be watching them all again (and thus reviewing them on this site). The set covers movies 1-8... "From Crystal Lake to Manhattan"...

I also received three of the Hellraiser figures (put out by NECA)... I got Chatterbox & Stitch from Series 1, plus the Bloodline Twins from series 3. These figures are friggin' bad ass! I may be a geek for collecting action figures at age 27, but so what... what do you care jerk face!

2004-12-02
New review is up for Ju-on: The Grudge (the Japanese original). Good flick, check it out!

2004-10-29
Ok folks.. I read some bummer news today over at ESplatter.com... apparantly Sam Raimi doesn't wanna lend Ash to the sequel to Freddy vs. Jason. There is some good news there though... Part of the reason Raimi didn't wanna lend Ash was because he wants to use him again in the future for another Evil Dead movie... and didn't wanna have to worry about "protecting" him in a Freddy vs. Jason flick.

Sooooo... since Ash is out... who would you have in his place? I've posted a poll on this very question over on the message board. My personal choice would be Pinhead. I'm sure they could tie that puzzle box into this franchise somehow... Think on it... it'd be cool!

2004-10-28
I saw Donnie Darko last night. It's not a horror movie (though it was marketed to me as such). That aside...it's one of the best movies I've ever seen and I've given it my very first perfect (5 bruce campbell head) rating. Please see this film if you have not already done so.

2004-10-27
In the mail the other day I received a VHS movie I had won off of Ebay... When I opened that manilla envelope, what I pulled forth was THE greatest B-Horror Movie that I have EVER seen... "Rock 'N Roll Nightmare" ! This puppy has been out of print forever, and they have thus far refused to release it on DVD.... but now I have a copy... and the next Horror Movie Night is going to be the best one yet... I'm so happy I could cry!

Oh, and I've got new reviews up for "The Bunker", and "Dreamcatcher" over on the reviews page.

2004-10-02
Coming very soon... "Drunk Brey ruins Horror Movie Night". Stay tuned!

Plus a new review for "Bleed" coming shortly!

2004-09-27
There is an official Horror Movie Night coming up this Friday October the 1st. Details can be found here. Some of us are planning on meeting up beforehand at the RAM brewery at 700 Milwaukee Ave. in Wheeling. If yer interested in stopping by, please do so. If you need directions just give me a holler.

I've just got a couple of Zombie related news items to talk about:

1. One year from now (fall 2005), George A. Romero's 4th dead film, Land of the Dead, will be released! If you are not jumping up and down with joy right now you are looking at the wrong website.

2. Go buy the recently released Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition by Anchor Bay. While your at it pick one up for me too cuz I'm poor and can't afford it myself. Thanks buddy!

2004-08-23
The message board is now up!

2004-08-23
Well well well...my very first news item. What's so important that I just had to post it on the front page of this here site? Why only the biggest most bad-ass piece of news ever reported in any form of media in the history of this or any other universe!

drum roll please.....

Three words...."Freddy"...vs "Jason"...vs "ASH"! HOLY SWEET JESUS! Yes folks, they are making a sequal to last years "Freddy vs. Jason"...."Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash"! If you don't know who Ash is then I hate you and I would never be your friend in real life ... so go away! For you true horror fans out there, I don't need to even begin to explain how cool this is!

Simply put...best...news...ever.

I don't know when it's coming out and/or when they're planning to start shooting it. And yeah, it ain't 100% final yet... but when Robert Englund is plugging the concept and saying he hopes they do it....well that just makes me hot
