Donnie Darko(2001 / R)
This is a daunting movie to review...mainly because I really have no idea what happened in the movie... However it's one of the most fascinating films I've ever seen! I was literally speechless after having seen this film... It affected me in such a way that I wasn't exactly sure how to feel about the movie... happy? sad? bewildered? I felt a bit of each..
I don't fully understand this movie enough to give you any sort of effective plot outline, so let me be short and vague:
Donnie Darko is a troubled teen who sleep walks, sees a therapist, and has waking hallucinations where he sees a giant bunny named Frank. This movie follows Donnie through 28 days of his life.... he goes to school, meets a girl, has problems with authority, and explores the theory of time travel. Please just trust me and go see this film for yourself. Even if my brief and vague plot synopsis does not intrigue you... just see the movie. It'll be well worth your while.
The movie beautifully shot, and the acting performances turned in are great, especially by Jake Gyllenhal as Donnie. There are also some notable big name actors that do very well for their parts and don't distract from the movie with their star power: Drew Barrymore, Patrick Swayze, and Noah Wylie (from E.R.).
One final thing... this is not really a horror movie. It's been presented as such on various sites, and if you were to look at the DVD cover it looks like a dark and creepy film. The movie is dark and creepy at times... and Frank the Bunny is a very creepy element. I'm reviewing it on this site just because I rented it thinking it would be more horror and I wanted to explain that though it is not in fact "horror".. you should see it none the less.
It is a fantastic movie that you'll be pondering for weeks after having viewed it. I give this film my very first 5 bruce campbell head rating.
