Ju-on: The Grudge (2003 / R)
This is the original Japanese version of the American movie "The Grudge" that was released in 2004. I've not seen the American re-make, but from what I've heard the original Japanese version is much better. Though to be honest the only reason I watched the Japanese version is because I was able to get it quicker through NetFlix on DVD than I woulda been able to get out to the theaters to see the Americanized version!
Anyhoo...this movie was really good! The story was a tiny bit hard to follow due to it's structure and multiple points of view (a la Pulp Fiction), and due to the fact that it was subtitled and I watched the movie late at night when I was tired.... but all in all it was a very good horror movie!
The whole point of the movie is that when somebody dies through an act of extreme violence, a curse (Ju-on) is born. And that curse kills anybody it comes into contact with. The original curse is created when a husband kills his wife and young child, and spreads from there as social workers, teachers, and students all visit or interact somehow with the house in which the violent crime was committed. Each person that encounters the ju-on gets there own little section of the movie, and I was first very confused to see characters that I thought were dead reappear later on in the film... but once I figured out how they were presenting the film I was fine.
I found this flick to be genuinely creepy... so much so that as I was watching it late at night I found myself looking around my living room at every little sound my house made...sound my house probably always makes that I normally wouldn't notice... It's been a while since a movie affected me like that. If you can sit through sub-titles, I highly reccommend this movie!
