Mary Reilly(1996 / R)
This is a movie I remember wanting to see when it first came to theaters back in '96... but I never did... and then I forgot about it until just a couple of months ago, when I was browsing through NetFlix looking to pad my already bulging queue. Was it worth the long wait? Short answer: nope.
This movie was just "ok". I liked the atmosphere of the film, and I most always enjoy a John Malkovich performance. Julia Roberts didn't bug me like she sometimes does, and there's a nifty little role set aside for Glenn Close as a gaudy Madame. There were good performances all around.. I'll give the movie that much.... the main problem is the movie just didn't seem to do anything for me...
Mary Reilly is the story of Dr. Jeckyl and Mr. Hyde as seen through the eyes of Mary Reilly, the house maid in Dr. Jeckyl's home. Mary becomes fascinated w/ the good doctor, and in turn his lurid seductive "assistant", Mr. Hyde.
There's lots of suspense as Mary, in her curiosity about the two men, pokes around where she should poke around. There are some jumps in the film, and there was actually a fair amount of blood/gore (which I wasn't expecting; i.e. Glenn Close's demise!). But all in all I was left entirely unsatisfied as the movie came to a close.
While not a "bad" film... I really can't recommend it.
