Ginger Snaps 3: The Beginning

(2004 / R)

Damnit these movies keep getting worse and worse! Granted there was very little drop-off from the first Ginger Snaps to the second one... but sadly the drop-off from the second to the third is much more noticeable.

Ginger Snaps 3: The Beginning is a prequel, taking place in the 1700s on the Canadian frontier. Bridget & Ginger are back again as sisters (distand relatives of the characters from Ginger Snaps 1 & 2?) who are unusually close. We find the two of them travelling through the Canadian wilderness (during the winter) as they search for shelter (presumably the boat they were on sunk and they were the only survivors)

They come upon an ominous elderly Indian woman who provides them w/ some sort of warning, and shortly after leaving the Indian camp, Bridgit gets caught in a bear trap! (D'oh!). Well along comes another friendly Indian that frees her and takes the girls to the lone trading outpost in the area where they seek shelter.

Turns out this trading outpost has been under siege by werewolves for some time now, and the occupancy of the fort is dwindling. Needless to say Ginger at some point gets bitten by a werewolf, and Brigid is confronted by the decision of whether to stick by, or kill her sister. There's really not a lot new offered in this film unfortunately.

However, I still very much enjoy the characters of Ginger & Brigid... though I was sad to see the strong & resourceful Brigid from Ginger Snaps 2 was gone... Yet the two characters continue to fascinate me. The cast of characters trapped in the fort were also finely cast (no pun intended) me thinks!

Also, the werewolves were pretty cool, & the effects were again solid. I just didn't like this movie as much as either of the previous ones... I would've much rather seen a continuation of the 2nd movie rather than a prequel...(who knows, that movie still might get made).

This is still in the top tier of werewolf movies that I've seen... it's just the weakest in this particular franchise.
