Beyond the Darkness

(1979 / R)

Also known as: Buio Omega

Wow! What a great, sick, and disturbing movie! It's been a while since I've seen something this sick and disgusting... high marks for turning me off a bit!

This is the story of Frank & his dead wife. Frank is the young owner of a palacial estate (& taxidermy shop). His wife dies of mysterious cirumstances (voodoo?). Frank cannot live w/out his wife so he digs her up and takes her home (picking up a hitchhiker in the process). He then, in one of the most graphicly disgusting scenes I've ever witnessed, embalms his wife. The scene where he sucks her brains out via the nostrils is especially stomach churning! (bravo!). When his wife is fully preserved he puts her in a nightgown, and puts her in their bed...where she just lies around (lazy corpse!)

Frank has a housekeeper named Iris, and the two of them seem to have a twisted Oedipal type of relationship (she tries to breast feed him as he grieves over his dead wife). Iris is actually pretty helpful at first, as she helps Frank hide the fact that he not only stole a corpse from the cemetery, but is also keeping it in his home.

Iris also helps Frank kill any women that are unfortunate enough to find out about Frank's secret (anybody remember that hitchhiker I mentioned earlier?). These killings are pornographically gruesome! We get to see nails being ripped off w/ plyers... limbs hacked from body, bodies being dissolved in an acid batch, cremation, eye gouging.... well, you get the picture.... This movie is a gorehound's dream!

The only place I can really knock this movie is on the soundtrack... it's done by Italian horror film legends "The Goblins"... but I found it just distracted from the film... my friends and I commented on the score every time is played... not good. Plus the movie dragged a bit early on (is it really necessary to show Frank change a tire on his truck from beginning to end?).

All in all this was a very solid gore flick! Not scary, but definately not for the weak of stomach.
