Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed

(2004 / R)

This is a highly badass werewolf movie! I had heard a lot of crap about how this movie just wasn't up to snuff with the original....well that's a load of crap folks! This movie is 99% as good as the original! I heard it was "too talky"... well so the fuck what! God forbid there be some intriguing dialog and non-action in a horror movie... it can't be all chase scenes and severed limbs, and naked boobies! (though I never complain when it is!).

Well I guess I let the cat out of the bag there, yes, there are no naked boobies in this film. Moving on....

This film picks up where the original Ginger Snaps left off. Ginger has been killed by her sister Brigitte, but now Brigitte is infected with the were-virus and is on the run from a werewolf that is tracking her down to "mate" with her. Brigitte overdoses on the herb wolfsbane (she shoots it up to keep her from fully transforming into a werebitch herself) and is found by paramedics and taken to a local drug-rehab center. They think she's a druggie. Most of the movie takes place within the confines of the drug-rehab center. The reason I liked this part of the movie so much has a great deal to do with Emily Perkins (the actor playing Brigitte)...she is a delight (yeah, I know yer all thinking James Lipton right now!) to watch on the screen. I don't know what it is about her, but I am fascinated with her performance! I was hanging on her every action, and on her every word.

The other character in this film that makes it so highly enjoyable is Ghost (played by Tatiana Maslany). Ghost is staying at the drug-rehab center because her grandmother is being treated there for severe burns on her entire body. Ghost cannot live alone so she stays at the hospital w/ her gramma. Ghost is another fascinating ( I know, get a thesaurus right?) character who just so happens to be obsessed with comic books...some of which revolve around werewolves. So do you think Ghost figures out Brigitte's little secret? Do ya? Huh? You have to watch to find out suckers!

Back to the story... well Brigitte is confined to the rehab center, and is befriended by Ghost, and only Ghost. She is in dire need of wolfsbane (it was taken from her when she checked in) in order to prevent her from fully transforming. One of the rehab workers, Tyler, has her stash of wolfsbane, but he's not so willing to give it to her. Tyler's got a bit of a racket going on wherein he gives drugs to the patients in exchange for "favors". What an institution!

Again, I digress! You've got to keep me on track here people! So Ghost happens to have free reign in the hospital, and knows how to get out... so Brigitte enlists Ghost to help her escape. Ghost agrees, but only if Brigitte takes her when she leaves. As they make there escape, the werewolf that's been tracking Brigitte shows up and causes all manner of havoc... do Ghost and Brigitte escape? And if so, where do they go and what do they do? Well that my friends I will not tell you... you must see the movie for yourselves. I highly recommend it! The ending is...interesting. The only reason I say this movie is only 99% as good as the original, is because I'm still just not sure how I feel about the ending.
