Hellboy

(2004 / PG13)

Not really a "horror" movie per say... Hellboy is a supernatural action flick that contains at times some pretty creepy moments. I've not read the comic books that this movie is based on, however I didn't feel left out while watching the film... If there were inside jokes or moments that only the die-hard comic book fans would recognize...well I didn't notice them, and they therefore didn't detract from my cinematic experiecne.

Hellboy is a demon brought forth from another dimension by an occult group of Nazis (circa the 1940s) aided by none other than Rasputin... that's right.. the mad monk himself! Well the nazis plans are thwarted by the US army and Hellboy (literally just a child at this point) is taken in by a young scientist.

[Fast forward to current times...]

The scientist has raised Hellboy, who now works for some secret department of paranormal something or other (too lazy to look it up). Whenever monsters or demons need to be taken care of a team of "freaks" from this dept is sent in. The team consists of Hellboy, Abe Sapien (an aquatic humanoid), and Liz (a firestarter).

The basic premise of the movie is that the evildoers from early in the film have come back 50 years later to destroy the world! Hellboy fits into their plans and must choose between being a demon, and being a man... That's about all I'm willing to give away of the plot... There' also is a sort of love story w/ Hellboy and Liz that works its way into the story.

The special effects in this flick are amazing, and Ron Perlman as Hellboy is absolutely perfect! This is one of those movies that's just plain fun to look at. My only complaint is in the lack of variety to the monsters in the film... But hey, that's a pretty minor gripe.
