Dead and Buried

(1981 / R)

The opening scene, in which a tourist photographer is attacked and burned alive in broad daylight, sets the tone for the entire film. Dead and Buried is a gritty horror film the like of which we don't see too often anymore. With the plague of PG-13 "horror" films that is the current trend there's just no room for burning people alive in broad daylight... and it's a crying shame!

This story takes place in the secluded coastal town of Potter's Bluff. As I've previously stated it opens w/ a photographer being brutally attacked and burned alive while vacationing near Potter's Bluff. During the ensuing investigation we meet up w/ our main characters, the town's sheriff, and Dobb's, the towns coroner. Well of course more murders take place, and the Sheriff senses that something odd is going on, while Dobb's is just odd. We also get the sense that the Sheriff's wife isn't all there either... something is defnately not normal in Potter's Bluff... See the people that are being murdered keep turning up in town...alive, but as different people. The photographer murdered in the firt scene of the film is the new gas attendant. The other odd thing the movie lets us in on right away is that that it's the townsfolk that are committing these murders.

The reason behind the murders and all the "strangness" of Potter's Bluff is explained at the end in a most effective manner. Lot's of twists and turns at the end, and even if you figure out what's going on before it get's there... this 20+ year old movie is still a breath of fresh air in today's watered down horror market.
