Joyride

(2001 / R)

I liked this movie! It was a good solid fear flick! I panned "They" a bit for not ever displaying the monsters in the movie..but this is a movie that succeeds in not displaying it's villain. You never really see the villain.... and it works really well!

The basic plot is that two brothers and a friend are on a road-trip home during a break in college (not sure which one, and it doesn't matter). One of the brothers (Steve Zahn) is the black sheep of the family and thus if full of mischief. He picks up a CB radio at a gas station along the way and decides to have a bit-o-fun with a trucker whose CB monkier is "Rusty Nail". He gets his more upstanding brother to join in on the fun as they pose as a female trucker named "Candy Cane". They dupe Rusty into meeting up w/ "Candy" at an adjacent room in the motel where they are staying for the night.... well Rusty shows up and all hell breaks loose.... I will not divulge the remaining plotline, but suffice to say... Rusty is pissed, and he knows who duped him.

The best part of this movie is Rusty himself... even though we never really get to physically see him (though I did see him in the alternate endings on the DVD...and let me say that I'm very glad they didn't show him... cuz he physically didn't meet my expectations). Rusty's creepy voice coming in over the CB radio is the highlight of this film. I'm not sure if it's the same actor (and I'm not gonna check it cuz I'm lazy)... but the voice of Rusty sounds like the guy who played Buffalo Bill (the serial killer Jodie Foster was hunting) in the Silence of the Lambs.

I highly reccomend this film! It's not quite a 5 Bruce Campbell head film...but a very solid film it is.
