The Village

(2004 / PG13)

Here's the twist in this movie....

Nah! I won't spoil the "twist" for you. But I must say that the trailers lied! They are misleading you to think this is an actual horror film! Had I known what this movie was actually about I probably wouldn't have rushed out to see it opening weekend!

Now, that being said, this movie does not by any stretch suck. I actually have very mixed feelings about the film. Some of the moods/tones created in this film are genuinely creepy and unnverving. The cinemetography is bloody brilliant! However I was in the end dissapointed with the film. I joked with my buddy in the theatre at one point about a potential twist.... I say "joked" because I didn't actually expect that it would be the twist.... little did I know that I had unwittingly stumbled across it.

The concept here is definately "neat", but I went into the film expecting something entirely different. My wife would probably dig this film and she hates horror movies. (if that's any gauge for you)

As for the story... this isolated village (circa 1890 or so) lives with an underlying fear of "those whose name we do not speak"... creatures that live beyond the border of the village... within the woods. The townsfolk are told to never enter the woods, and to always hide the "bad" color (red). Apparantly there is a truce with the town and the creatures, so the creatures don't much bother the villagers.

One villager (played by Joaquin Phoenix) is in love with the blind daughter of the village leader/elder (William Hurt). They plan on getting married... problem is the village idiot (Adrien Brody) also loves the blind daughter, so he stabs Joaquin several times (in jealousy), leaving him near death. Well since this village has no contact with the outside world they do not have the most advanced medicine necessary to save Joaquin.... so William Hurt explains the towns secret to his daughter and sends her to the "Towns", outside their village and through the dreaded woods, to get "medicines" to save Joaquin.

I'll not give away the execution of this plot, as I can find no fault with it... I do reccomend seeing this movie, just know what it is, and what it isn't....and you'll probably enjoy it more than I.
