The Descent(2005 / R)
"A woman goes on vacation with her family and friends and her husband and her daughter encounters a tragic accident. One year later she goes hiking with her friends and they get trapped in the cave. With a lack of supply, they struggle to survive and they meet strange blood thirsty creatures." (imdb.com)
The Descent is the second great horror flick from Neil Marshall (the first being "Dog Soldiers"). He's very quickly become one of my favorite directors and I'm very much looking forward to whatever he decides to do next.
Simply put, I loved this movie. It's a very claustrophobic film which starts out slowly, but not in a bad way. You get enough time to get to know the characters and for the forboding atmosphere to build, and build, and build, and build..... and when the action finally kicks in it never eases up.
The creatures in the film are incredibly creepy and not at all supernatural. There's a ton of blood and and some pretty gruesome & brutal scenes. If you have apprehensions on seeing this movie (as I did), trust me, see it anyways. It's so much better than the plot outline would indicate. The ONLY thing worth griping about is the ending (I watched the un-edited directors cut) which at worst just gives you something to debate about with your friends after the movie. This is an easy 5 Bruce Campbell head movie.
