Friday the 13th part VI: Jason Lives

(1986 / R)

"Tommy returns to the grave to make sure Jason is dead and accidently brings him back to life. Now it's up to Tommy to stop Jason's mindless killing and put him back where he belongs." (imdb.com)

I've just recently started watching the Friday the 13th box set I received for xmas a few years back and have thus far gotten as far as part VI, Jason Lives. It's taken me this long to remember to start putting up reviews for these movies, which is why i'm starting with this one. I've decided that since the Friday the 13th franchise is such a monument unto itself, that these movies shall be rated in relation to eachother and not in comparison to other "good" horror movies. So a 5 star Bruce Campbell head rating just means it's the best out of the franchise, whilst a 0 star rating means it's the worst out of the franchise. I'll say right here and now that not a single Friday the 13th film rates higher than a 3.5 Bruce Campbell rating in relation to the wide world of horror cinema. However the fluctuation in quality amongst all the Friday the 13th movies is great. That being said, on with the review!

This is easily the worst in the series up to this point...hands down. As you can gather from the brief plot description above, Tommy Jarvis is an idiot and due to his idiocy is a completely unlikeable lead character. The remaining cast are caricatures of previous Friday the 13th cast, and the plot is pretty much the same as Parts I & II (Jason kills camp counselors and anybody else he finds in the vicinity of Camp Crystal Lake).

Up until this entry in the franchise it didn't bother me overly much that they were just re-hashing the same basic premise over and over again. Why? Because of blood, guts, & sex! The friday the 13th movies up until this point always had great kill sequences and always showed an ample amount of skin. This movie wouldn't even be rated R if it came out today. The ONLY thing it has is lots of blood, but they don't actually SHOW anybody getting killed! They cut away right when they should be cutting to a great effect! And there's barely ANY sex in the film, and any that is shown is WAY more tame than stuff you'd find on most sitcoms these days.

Basically this movie is a really bad joke. I don't know if the MPAA board fucked the movie up, or if the director fucked it up, but either way it's fucked, and either way it's barely watchable.
