Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

(2006 / R)

"On the surface Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel) seems like your average, small-town, nice guy. He has goals, ambitions and asperations........ follow in the footsteps of his long-time heroes Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees and be the world's next great psycho-slasher. A true self-promoter, Leslie gives documentary filmmaker Taylor Gentry (Angela Goethals) and her crew exclusive access to his life as he plans and executes his great reign of terror over the sleepy town of Glen Echo, all the while deconstructing the conventions and archetypes of the horror genre for them."(imdb.com)

This was a very clever movie that I very much enjoyed. A real entertaining piece of work. This movie was much hyped to me by people whose taste I trust (for the most part...freakin John Brey & Mr. Jingles!) so I'm not surprised I liked the movie. I am surprised how much I liked the movie though. The best way I can explain it is that it was just very refreshing. It was definately unique. For all you indepdendent film-makers out there, this is the way to make a low budget movie! It can be done and not be a piece of crap!

Anyways I digress. The only knock i have on this film is that near the end it was a little bit too predictable. My general rule of thumb is that if I've figured out the twist in a movie before it's sprung, then it couldn've been masked a little bit better. But that's really the only negative thing I have to say about this movie and the only thing preventing it from getting a perfect score.

Also worth noting are the cool cameos (which I won't spoil) and the nicely done sequence they put in there behind the closing credits...don't stop the DVD prematurely!
