The Brotherhood of Satan

(1971 / PG)

"A family is trapped in a desert town by a cult of senior-citizens who recruit the town's children to worship Satan." (imdb.com)

In this case the imdb plot outline actually doesn't do the movie complete justice. The reason the senior citizens are recruiting the children is so that they can perfomr a ritual in which they'll (the seniors) kill themselves and then their souls will occupy the bodies of the children...a process which they hope to attain immortality. In concept it's pretty cool and chilling, in practice it's slow and tedious. I swear to Christ that there was a 5 minute scene where all I did was watch a couple and their child driving in their car...and the shot was of the couple in their car...so I was staring at this couple, who were in turn staring at the scenery (which I wasn't privy to) for 5 god-forsaken minutes! No dialogue was spoken in this time period either!

The pacing of the movie was just horrible, which is what really kills the score for this one. There's enough good content to take up a 30/45 minute film, but they drag it out to an agonizing 85 minutes. When there was plot occuring on the screen I did thoroughly enjoy it. It was cool the way the satanists used the children's toys to kill off the parents, and the towns paranoia comes off as very genuine. The satantic rituals are somewhat disturbing, and the ending, while some might hate it, was pretty well done.

Some people may love this film as is, but I can only give it 2 1/2 Bruce Campbell heads because of the pacing. What actually happens is worth seeing, but you may want to fast-forward through a lot of it.
