The Burning(1981 / R)
A caretaker at a summer camp is burned when a prank goes tragically wrong. After several years of intensive treatment at hospital, he is released back into society, albeit missing some social skills. What follows is a bloody killing spree with the caretaker making his way back to his old stomping ground to confront one of the youths that accidently burned him. (imdb.com)
This is a "classic" slasher film that I'd never seen until recently (been trying to catch up on some golden oldies!). This movie is just as dated as Terror Train (which I only gave 3 Bruce Campbell heads), however it's got two things in abundance that Terror Train lacked:
1. Unintentional Humor
- The movie is drenched in awful performances and just downright goofy stupid characters...it's great!
2. An iconic villain
I'm sure many of you are now muttering "well if he is such an iconic villain, how come I've never heard of him?", and that's a damned good question...one for which I have no plausible answer... "Cropsy" (our villain's name) could have been as huge as Jason, Michael Myers, or Freddy Krueger... a horribly burnt man in a trench coat with a fedora that kills people with a pair of gardening shears?! What the fuck hollywood how could you not franchise this beautiful son of a bitch!? So I guess there's your answer... you've never heard of Cropsy because Hollywood fucked up.
This is a damned solid slasher flick. It's the kind of movie that only made greater by it's flaws. Definitely recommended.
