They

(2002 / PG13)

Well going into this movie I knew it'd have to have a very very good plot/story to make it enjoyble. Why? The movie is PG-13! I can already rule out nudity, cussing, and bloody violence & gore! What's left in a horror movie? Sadly, though promising in it's concept, the story is not enough to make this a truly enjoyable film. In fact up until the very end I found myself saying "this kinda sucks" a whole lot....not a good sign.

So the plot of this one is that several friends realize that the night terrors they had when they were kids were a result of "They"... "They" being creatures that truly do inhabit the dark places in your room at night (i.e. the closet, under the bed, etc...). And "They" have now come back for them as adults. Well this plot point very much appealed to me! I've often pondered this very concept... what if there were really monsters & such lurking in the dark? The ideas fascinates me.

Sadly this idea is explored with little depth. The story and it's inhabitants jerkily jump from one scene to the next, often leaving you to wonder where they are, and why they are there. Though there is a fairly decent amount of suspense in the film, there is never really any good payoff. You never really get to see what "They" look like. There is never any real explanation about what just happened in this movie....

All in all the movie was a huge let-down for me. I was truly hoping for a suspensful creepy exploration of the whole "monster under the bed" concept. The one redeeming point in this film is the ending scene. It is a truly dark and creepy scene involving the heroine and "They" that has stuck with me. Unfortunately the ending doesn't make up for the rest of the film.

I'll give this movie 2 Bruce Campbell heads for the ending alone.
